ULBS Students Invited to Apply for the 19th Jyväskylä Winter School of Ecology (Finland)



The University of Jyväskylä (Finland) announces the 19th edition of the Jyväskylä Winter School of Ecology, taking place 11–20 February 2026 at the Konnevesi Research Station. The programme is designed for advanced Master’s and PhD students interested in ecology and related fields.

Courses Offered

  • Disease Ecology of Wildlife-originated Zoonoses in the Nordic Region
    1 ECTS | 11–14 February 2026

  • Boreal Winter Ecology
    2 ECTS | 16–20 February 2026

The Winter School provides students with the opportunity to learn from internationally recognised researchers, gain hands-on experience in winter ecology field methods, and study in a unique research station environment. Courses are intensive, interactive, and taught in English.

Who Can Apply?

The programme is open to both Finnish and international students majoring in:

  • Biology

  • Ecology

  • Evolution

  • Microbiology

  • Aquatic Ecology

  • Limnology

  • Hydrobiology

  • Environmental Science

Additional Activities

Depending on weather conditions and participant interest, students may also engage in optional winter activities such as:

  • Ice hole fishing and swimming

  • Stargazing

  • Owl listening and identification

  • Possible lynx call observations

These activities offer a unique way to experience the Finnish winter.

Costs and Practical Information

Participation in the courses is free of charge.
Students are responsible for covering their own travel, accommodation, and meals.
A participation fee (covering accommodation, meals, and a field trip to Pyhä-Häkki National Park) will be required upon acceptance. Details are available on the programme website.
