8. Touring the Rhine: Travel Writing, the History of Place, and the Romantic Imagination
One might better understand literature and arts when one sees the site of inspiration for oneself – that is exactly what the students on this mobility will be invited to do! This mobility will introduce the Rhine in eighteenth and nineteenth century travelogues in English, through visits to the Rhine valley. The literary focus of the project is Ann Radcliffe’s A Journey Made in the Summer of 1794 (1795). Alongside workshops on poetry and lectures on the Rhine, Romantic literature and Radcliffe, students will participate in a museum trip, hikes around St Goar and Bingen, and visit sites of the Romantic imaginary accompanied by staff from the Department of English Literature and Culture. At the end of the week, participants will create their own journals to record their experience of the region in relation to the Romantic construction of the Rhine.

12. Living from Difference! Intercultural Encounters & the Contradictions of Pluriversal Ways of Being
In a fast-moving present, the familiar turns unfamiliar as we find ourselves rooted in one place yet dispersed across the globe. Our Summer School invites students to explore questions of space, belonging, and social rootedness in a globalized world. Using creative interdisciplinary methods, we will examine living environments shaped by migration, diversity, and shifting boundaries. Sibiu serves as a case study of coexistence among majorities, minorities, locals, newcomers, people in transit. Through research workshops, artistic formats, and dialogue with locals, we will reflect on societal challenges and share our findings — for instance, in a joint exhibition. Cross-faculty cooperation is envisioned to address the complexity of the issues.
